Long Division with Remainders
14 Versions of the Same EP
Version 7
I am proud to be taking part in the Long Division with Remainders project Fourteen Versions of the Same EP. The original EP comprises four experimental sound creations, which co-creator Justin Watson describes as 'basic electronic fumblings', these are sent to 14 artists / producers / sound creators to mangle / remix / sample which are then returned and released.
With a tendency to like odd jazzy chords, drum loops and nice little tunes, LDwR presents quite a challenge but a challenge that is extremely welcome. When I first heard the original sound files I thought they had got corrupted as part of the file transfer. The great thing about collaborations is that they force you out out of your comfort zone, into new areas. I put the original files on loop and played along with different sounds, not thinking too much about it, until I hit on something that struck me as working. As a result of the profound minimalism of the original files I found myself particularly needing to justify every single note, chord and beat. Well, just about. Dusted off some trad jazz brush drum (legal) loops I've been saving for a special occaision. Sarah says the tracks are injected with sadness to their core.
My version of the EP is dedicated to the memory of my late father, James William Peel.
The Ken Peel version will be out in May or June, as a free download from ldwr.net, and in time as part of the boxed of the complete works by all contributing artists.
